February 1

Just to make the order of the Gods a little more clearer (hopefully ) here is a family tree that maps them all out.

History you have a test today (thursday).

Science we are looking at :

Fast and Slow Twitch Muscle Fibers

Slow twitch fibers can fuel repeated and extended muscle contractions such as those required for endurance events like a marathon.

Fast twitch fibers produce that force at a higher rate (they fire more rapidly). So a lot of fast twitch fibers can be an asset to a sprinter when there is a limited amount of time to generate maximal force. The slow twitch fibers, on the other hand, fire less rapidly, but can go for a long time before they fatigue.

Your research project will be handed out. It will be based on The Principles of Sport.

The Principle Of Individual Differences

The Principle of Overload

The Principle of Progression

The Principle of Adaptation

The Principle of Use/Disuse

The Principle of Specificity

For this project/presentation I want you to select a sport (e.g soccer, snowboarding, running) and create a one month training program. The program should be unique and apply to the specific sport. The program should use anaerobic and aerobic exercise. If the above Principles apply to your sport you should incorporate them.

This is an example of the type of effort needed for this project.

Give examples of types of exercises and explain why they benefit the imaginary athlete you have created. You will also need a nutritional outline for this one month period. This project is to be handed in and to be presented. Be sure to make hand outs for the rest of the class on the day of the presentation.

Todays work will include :

Textbook pp. 109 - 111 Workbook Exercise 7.3, p. 97

Textbook pp. 120 - 125 Workbook Exercise 7.6, p. 100

Hope everyone had a good weekend, karaoke, blue mountain etc. Look forward to this Blue mountain trip:) I made monkeybread, I think theres not much left to bring and its crazy sweet and took far too much effort:P tastes kinda like a cinabun or something along those lines good after gym snack.

Back to business : for History you should keep your assignments in order and in your folder. You should be familiar with the Gods and the questions from the previous day. Do not forget the obituary column for a God. Today you will create their own ad campaign (using a real or imaginary product) that features one of the gods or heroes from the Greek myths. We will also look at Star wars connection to the Hero Myth and review the Hero Myth.

In Science read pages. 87 - 93

You should be able to distinguish between the three energy systems in use (e.g., warm-up and cool-down sessions versus wind-sprints or volleyball spiking drills, and so on).

Friday :). Todays class will consist of answering the questions from yesterday regarding Greek Gods.

The history assignment for today is :

Either retelling a myth in first person point of view, assuming the identity of a hero like Prometheus or Theseus or to write This should be single spaced at least 1 page and handed in Monday and you will have a test on Gods and mythology on Wednesday so heads up.

We will switch gears after the test and focus on Art, Architecture and Archeology of Ancient Civilizations like Greece, Rome and Egypt.

Exercise Science

Read Textbook pp. 81 - 86

Assign Exercise 5.3
(The Three Energy Pathways Compared) on p. 81 to allow you to gain a better understanding of the differences between each system. ATP – the common energy currency The three metabolic pathways: ATP-PC, glycolysis, cellular respiration Comparison of the three energy pathways Assign Exercise 5.4 (Energy Systems for Various Sports) on p. 82 in order for you to demonstrate an understanding of how the energy systems come into play in various sports.

This link has a slight relation to anatomy and bone structure. Interesting X-rays

And yet another link up for science class.

Yesterday we looked at anaerobic and aerobic types of exercise. We also wondered how many press ups one could do well .. (I guess they are not push ups anymore) one can do well behold the power of wiki.

Thats right :

The World Record for non-stop pushups is 10,507 by Minoru Yoshida of Japan on October, 1980.

Sweet jesus thats madness.. I think my record is 50 but I will have to do it in front of some judge and youtube it ..dont know about 10 thousand:P 10,000!

Back to History you should today research Prometheus who is a bit different from the rest of the gods. This guy was trouble he defied other gods and later Zeus. You should have at least a page of work describing the story of Prometheus and make sure to cover these questions.

What is it that Prometheus is not afraid of?

When does Prometheus say his suffering will end?

What will Zeus do to Prometheus?

How are Zeus and Prometheus similar?

What do you make of his actions? What kind of symbol might he have functioned for the classical authors?

Edith Hamilton (that book you are reading..right)contrasts the ways the Greeks and earlier peoples viewed the world. What are the differences that she sees between them?

This is a good site for those in History. This site is great and a serious chunk of the material you need to know is on there so make good use of it.

10 000 :P I think that record is safe.

Science questions for today:

Why is it important to do cardiovascular exercise?

Define target heart rate.

Why do you get sore after some exercising, but not after others?

The difference between anaerobic and aerobic exercise?

List as many aerobic and anaerobic exercises as possible.

Explain the difference between high and low impact aerobics.

We will look at the “100-meter dash” and “marathon.”

Which race is faster?
Which race takes longer?
Which race requires more energy in a shorter period of time?
Which race requires more energy over a longer period of time?

This is a good site for examining aerobic and anaerobic.

And this one is good for identifying the difference between High and Low impact aerobics.
?

1. warmup period
2. aerobic activities
3. endurance experiences for muscle strength
4. cooldown period

These are the four main parts of an ideal cardiovascular program.

Also here is a fun game ...current record 202 squares.

The record is held by John Lee of Horizons.

Beat That!

January 23

Ok so today we looked at a handout on the different movements of the body. We also looked at a Bodyworlds film.

You should be aware of Aerobic and Anaerobic Conditioning.

In Myth you should be finished your work on different Gods and be familiar with their importance to the ancient Greeks and later the Romans.

Ok grrr weekend goes fast ...hope you studied for a science quiz cause it is today :)

In history you should have jeopardy questions based on the Greek gods that you researched and the advertisement assignment.

A newspaper is not complete without an obituary column. today you will brainstorm a list of heroes in mythology that might include Odysseus, Hercules, Achilles or Zeus. Write about one of the heroes. Creating details of the heroes life as if it were to be read in a newspaper.

An ancient Greece youtube video I found ..I am on a roll :P and this sounds like acdc as a bonus.

Here is a science link that I found that is pretty good. Watch it! it isn't easy to find educational material on youtube :P

January 18

OK so the test which shouldn't be that difficult is on Monday. So for Thursday we will continue too examine muscles of the body.

Muscular contraction, and the three basic kinds of contraction.

How muscle fibre responds to physical training

The location of key muscles and muscle groups throughout the body

Ways in which the body’s major muscle groups can be exercised, and the role of resistance training as a way of exercising muscles.

You should read Textbook pp. 44 - 51

The focus is on the neck and vertebral column, muscles of respiration and the abdomen, and muscles of the shoulder.

I will assign Exercise 3.11 (Muscles of the Arm) on pp. 56 - 57 to develop an understanding of the location, structure, and function of these muscles.

Assign Exercise 3.1 (Section Quiz) on p. 40 to allow you to review material covered in this section.

In history:

We will study the Gods and Godesseses. Study the heroes and monsters in Greek Mythology. Use this knowledge to create a jeopardy game using the Greek and Roman names of each of the Olympians as well as their area of power. We will also learn some of the other popular god’s information. The jeopardy cards have names and areas of power mixed around. The clues have names, areas of power, actions, symbols, etc. You then hand in their cards with pieces of paper when the clues are given.

We will then look at mythology in advertisements. You need to go through magazines, phone books, etc. and pick out ads that relate to mythology. For example, Nike for the goddess Nike. After they find different types of advertisements, then they are to find a company whose logo comes from mythology and research that company.

You need to find out all they can about the company, why the company chose their name. After they have found many advertisements and a company, then they do a presentation where they share their findings as well as their knowledge of mythology.

Today we will review the major Gods and locations such as Mount Olympus. You will create a personal advertisement for their God of your choice and have it ready to be read aloud in class.

http://www.desy.de/gna/interpedia/greek_myth/gods.html#GreekGods

This is a good website to get familiar with the ancient Greek gods.

Titans are the first gods and goddesses and the first rulers of Mt. Olympus. They are all the children of Uranus and Gaia.

Gods and Goddesses ruled on Mt. Olympus after they beat the Titans in a battle.

You should be able to identify these Gods from ancient Greece:

1. King of the gods.

2. Goddess of beauty.

3. Queen of the gods.

4. God of the underworld.

5. God of the sea.

6. Goddess of wisdom.

7. Messenger of the gods.

8. Goddess of the Earth.

9. God of the sun.

10. God of war.

Homework for History will be to research a character from the movie Troy( which I am no longer playing I have seen it enough times:p) and analyze his or her role in the film and their significance. This should be one page single spaced.

Characters such as :

Agamemnon,Achilles,Menelaus,Hector,Paris,Helen of Troy,Ajax,Odysseus.

In science we will look at
types of Muscles and specific locations on the body.

http://msjensen.education.umn.edu/webanatomy/

This site is a great resource for self testing and making sure you can identify specific sections of the muscles on the body.

Assign Exercise 3.3 (Agonist and Antagonist Muscle Pairs) on p. 44 to develop an understanding of the function of opposing muscle pairs.

Within this lesson, the focus is on the neck and vertebral column, muscles of respiration and the abdomen, and muscles of the shoulder.

I will copy out Exercise 3.7 (Muscles of the Neck and Vertebral Column) on pp. 48 - 49 to develop an understanding of the location, structure, and function of these muscles.

I will also Assign Exercise 3.8 (Muscles of Respiration and the Abdomen) on pp. 50 - 51 to develop an understanding of the location, structure, and function of these muscles.

Exercise 3.9 (Muscles of the Shoulder) on pp. 52 - 53 to develop an understanding of the location, structure, and function of these muscles.

You will get into pairs and research 1 of the 3 areas. We will then regroup and share our findings..there better be findings :p

There will be a science quiz this Friday so heads up... things such as the skeletal system, 3 types of muscles, flexion ,pronation and planes and axes of the body.

And in history you should have read up until page 96 in your mythology book.

January 15

Ok so we are going to watch the rest of Troy in history class..a little earlier than expected but its a good base and preview of many of the elements we will be looking at.

In todays class we will be focusing on Etymology which is the study of where words come from.

The history of a linguistic form shown by tracing its development since its earliest recorded occurrence in the language where it is found, by tracing its transmission from one language to another.

http://www.etymologic.com/

Take this quiz you may need a dictionary for this ..actually I am guessing it will be required. It will be ten questions write down the ones you got correct. Now go to this page:

http://www.takeourword.com/arc_logi.html

Choose any 5 words and save the word history for each.

Read each word history and select the one you think of
interest.

Chosen word___________________________

Question concerning that word:

Four possible answers for the question:

a. the true answer

b. a fake answer

c. another fake answer

d. the third fake answer

Dont think I forgot about exercise science..
we should know major bones that make up the human skeleton ..right .

You should be familiar with the 5 types of bones,
the 3 types of muscles and have bought your books by now.

Anatomical planes and axes of rotation and
Terms of position and joint movement should be reviewed.

I will Assign Exercise 1.1 (Section
Quiz) on p. 12 to assess your knowledge of
key concepts covered in this first section.

You should be knowledgeable on these areas:

The differences between the human male and female skeleton

The role and functions of the skeleton in the human body

The human skeleton’s basic structure and composition

The five types of human bones

The names and locations of the body’s key bones and bone structures

The concepts of bone landmarks and insertions, and key landmark/insertion sites throughout the body

The process of ossification and bone formation

The process of bone remodelling

Epiphyseal or growth plates of bones

Bone fractures and their three main categories

How bones heal

Bone disease, stress fractures, and the effects of aging on bone

And don't forget to make the skeleton dance!!!!

In this history class we reviewed the Christmas myth.

We learned about Christmas Myths from around the world. The Origins of Christmas was looked at. Charlie Browns Christmas 30 minute episode will be screened. Discussion will consist of the modern commercial elements of holidays and their original roots. Students will on one page create their own holiday with their own unique elements similar to the Christmas celebrated today such as gifts, trees, lights etc only these will be switched to their own ideas.

Here is a good link for writing papers and stuff for now and for university.

January 10

For this science class we will review the three major types of muscle fibres.

The major muscle fiber groups are

Type 1

This is predominately the muscle fibre that is used when you perform endurance type of activities such as running or weight sessions where you are lifting in the 25 plus rep range. Generally if you are ever lifting in this fashion you are not looking to gain strength but rather hoping to improve the muscle fibre's ability to deal with lactic acid build-up. This type of training should only be utilized by endurance athletes such as marathon runners or cyclists however as it is not really that beneficial for other athletes.

Type 2a

These are much more focused on generating strength than the type 1 and have a rapid contraction rate. When you are performing typical strength training exercises in the 6-8 rep range this is predominately the muscle fibre type you are going to call upon. They have a high capability of generating ATP (high energy compound), which is the prime source of fuel for short duration activities.

Type 2b

These types of muscle fibres generate the most force and are used predominately in activities that require an all out burst of effort. They rely exclusively on ATP for fuel and are very large in nature. They have a small number of mitochondria and fatigue very rapidly.

These types of muscle fibres are going to be seen in highest proportions in athletes such as sprinters or power lifters. Since these athletes are rarely performing activities that last much longer than 60 seconds in length they simply do not need to develop their slow twitch muscle fibres.

Questions:

1. What is meant by the terms muscle endurance and muscle strength?

2. What is meant by the terms absolute and relative strength?

3. How does skeletal muscle differ from smooth muscle and cardiac muscle?

4. Muscles can contract while extending a joint or flexing a joint. What is the name for these types of movements?

5. There are two types of isotonic contractions – eccentric and concentric. What

movement action is described by each of these terms?

6. What is the difference between an isotonic and an isometric contraction?

In history class we polished your developed creation myth which should be a single page and feature common elements from traditional creation myths. You should also be familiar with Hesiod's Theogony .

The gods and goddesses of stories represent the metaphors that the ancient Greeks used to make sense of the world around them and of life in general. Research, write, and present a speech about a Greek god or goddess. You will be assigned a character for your speech. Your speech must include the following details:

* Your Greek name

* Your powers/responsibilities

* Your family relationships

* Your symbol(s) - this could be several items, including tools, animals, and/or cities.

Gods and Goddesses - The Religious & Social Background of the Greeks

The gods and goddesses of ancient Greece were created by man to explain the world around them, act as a means of exploration, provide legitimacy and authority to Greek aristocracy, and provide entertainment for the masses. The religion of the ancient Greeks did not have a single source of written scripture such as the Bible or the Qur'an. Furthermore, the ancient Greeks did not believe in absolute truth as practiced by modern faiths such as Christianity and Judaism. Generally, a Greek city-state would devote itself to a particular god or set of gods. Many city-states erected temples to their particular deities, and these deities were honored in festivals and animal sacrifices. The Greek gods and goddesses normally took on human form and lived in a society similar to human society. They exhibited all the emotions of human beings and frequently intervened in human history. The most significant difference between the Greek gods and humans was that the gods were immortal and human beings were not.

January 9

Today we covered Creation Myths in history and in exercise science we covered some anatomical terms and definitions.

In history we looked at an African creation myth.

We examine the main points common in many creation myths.

They all come from one source and are different only because time and local cultural circumstances have changed them. This is the reason why the details in the creation myths vary, but either the basic outline is similar, or at least they share common elements.

Most systems of myths have an explanation for the origin of the universe and its components. These myths are known as creation myths.

Creation myths teach some moral principle via obvious folk-hero stories or to instruct a culture about some tradition.

Humans are model builders and communicators. They cannot survive without complex models developed, improved, and passed from one generation to the next in the form of culture and society.

Here is a link that details creation myths.

In science we researched these following terms.

1. Flexion/Extension

2. Abduction/Adduction

3. Lateral/Medial Rotation

4. Pronation/Supination

You should be familiar with these terms.

We also looked at one of these areas:

1. Back

2. Upper Limb

3. Head and Neck

4. Thorax

5. Abdomen

6. Pelvis and Perineum

7. Lower Limb

Be familiar with all of the top list and choose 1 section of muscles and describe them from the second list.
