May 1 Prometheus

We are creating our Jason game board today and reviewing gods and myths for the test.

Here is a good website to review on the Prometheus Myth.

1. Prometheus is an unusual character—among other reasons, for defying both his fellow Titans and, later, Zeus. What do you make of his actions? What kind of symbol might he have functioned for the classical authors?

2. Edith Hamilton contrasts the ways the Greeks and earlier peoples viewed the world. What are the differences that she sees between them?

3. Were the Greek gods seen as helpers of mankind, or our tormentors?

4. Identify and explain how the film The Lion King is an example of a typical hero myth.

5. Creation myths are stories which explain the beginnings of the universe as a deliberate act of "creation" by a supreme being. Describe why creation myths are important. Explain why the tradition of storytelling can be seen as a tradition and a mode of cultural preservation. Create your own creation myth.

6.Looking back at the qualities the class said that good superhero stories possessed, which of these qualities did you see in Jason and the Golden Fleece? Support your ideas with specific examples from the story.

Make sure you can answer questions like this.

Also here is some news for you gamers get the background before you play:)

Business Class OIL Continued

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/iraq/map_midEastNR.html

Which countries appear to have the most oil? The least? Might this explain why we hear more in the media about some countries in this region than others?

"Many of the wars of this [20th] century were about oil, but the wars of the next century will be about water." –Former World Bank Vice President Ismail Serageldin

"The next war in the Near East will not be about politics, but over water." -Former UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali

Using this map

Egypt and Mesopotamia, developed in areas where water was plentiful. Why do you think this is the case?

On your map locate these bodies of water.

  • Persian Gulf
  • Red Sea
  • Gulf of Aden
  • Mediterranean Sea
  • Caspian Sea
  • Dead Sea
  • Gulf of Aqaba
  • Tigris (Dijlah) River
  • Euphrates (Al Furat) River
  • Jordan River
  • Nile River
  • Sea of Galilee
  • Gulf of Suez
Answer these questions to hand in today.

  • Briefly describe why water is a source of conflict, according to these articles.
  • Which countries are making plans to somehow change the natural flow or distribution of water? Which countries object to these plans, and why?
  • How does one country's control of a water source impact another country?
  • Why is the Southeast Anatolia Project (GAP) particularly controversial? Why is Turkey so determined to continue despite so much opposition?
Read these two articles on water.

Canadian and World History

In canadian history we will be looking at Confederation. Here is a link to look at the immigration of Canada.

  1. Answer the census question, “To which ethnic or cultural group did your ancestors belong?”
  2. Discuss why, in response to this question, some people indicate a Canadian origin, while others with similar ancestral backgrounds do not.
  3. What does it mean to be Canadian? Are Canadians different from Americans?
  4. The article, “I am Canadian,” states that “ethnicity means different things to different people.” What are your definitions of ethnicity and choose one that best incorporates all your views.
  5. Belonging to an ethnic group may result in advantages or disadvantages. Debate the consequences of a utopian world without ethnicity or one where ethnic distinctions cease to be made. What would be the plusses and minuses?
  6. According to “I am Canadian,” some people report multiple ethnic backgrounds such as, for example, Canadian along with another ethnicity. Discuss why some ethnic groups are more likely to do this than others.

April 18 Renaissance

Today we are looking at the Medici Family. Here are some starting questions

  • What do you already know about the Medici family and the Renaissance?
  • Where is Florence or Firenze, as it is known in Europe?
  • The Renaissance starts in the 14th century; what century is that? What years does that include?
  • How does a family become rich and powerful?

  • What was unique about Cosimo, Brunelleschi, and Florence?
  • How did Cosimo, Brunelleschi, and Florence contribute to the birth of the Renaissance?
  • What problems do you foresee for the Medici family? Why?
  • In what ways were the ancients and the great writers from the East and Orient different from the Christian thinkers of the Middle Ages?
  • In what ways does our society discourage or punish people for thinking, believing, and acting differently from the majority?
The people of this time had many superstitions. Malleus Maleficarum (1487), is a book on the evils of women and a manual on catching witches. Report on the five most bizarre beliefs, including at least two that have to do with human anatomy.

This is a good website on this book to find superstitions.

Examine your stock purchase.

Work on Chapter 8

You other guys are doing a test!

Try this game out.

THE project for this week is to examine all the things you come into contact with during a typical day. What I want you to do is write down every product that you touch or use during your day. Examples can be a banana or your alarm clock or phone or the bowls you eat breakfast out of.

Write all of these down and locate the place that the product came from. Make a list of all the products and places. Create a world wide map making stars where the products are made. Research the locations and prepare this to be handed in.

We are going to read this article today on oil.

April 13 Renaissance

History for today will include a look at Humanism and how it applied to the Renaissance period.

Here is a good website to get you started.

Also we will be looking at The birth of Venus by Botticelli.

  • Marked by a revival of interest in Classical literature and thought (ancient Greek and Roman)
  • Was a European phenomenon that was more worldly and secular than the preceding Medieval period
  • Focused on anthropocentric ideas, seeking to dignify and ennoble humans
  • Regarded humans as the crown of creation
  • Sought to civilize humans and help them realize their potential powers and gifts as well as to reduce the discrepancy between human potential and achievement
  • Concentrated on the perfection of a worldly life, rather than on the preparation for an eternal and spiritual life
  • Increasingly regarded humans as creatures perfectible on earth

“How do individual elements in The Birth of Venus reflect the characteristics of Renaissance Humanism?”

Use the following list of features in the painting to help students identify the major elements in the painting:

  • Venus’ sacred roses falling from the top left corner
  • Zephyr the west wind blowing wind onto Venus
  • Chloris the nymph, who later became Flora the goddess, is held by Zephyr
  • Waves in stylized V shapes
  • Venus imitating a pose of a famous antique Roman statue
  • The faraway look in Venus’ eyes
  • Orange grove on the right hand side
  • A nymph representing spring moves in from the right and attempts to cover Venus
  • A single blue anemone flower blooms at the feet of the nymph of Spring

Here is a website on the painting.

Identify characteristics of Renaissance art and humanism.

For Canadian History I want you to play the role of a war correspondent from the First or Second World War. Write headlines, news stories, local interest features, or advertisements as if you went back in time.

Examine this photo.

Make a list of what the poster means toyou, what it makes you think of, how it makes you feel, and other relevant details they wish to include. Share your list within their group, and explain why you listed certain things.

Create your own poster commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Present your poster to the class. You should explain what their poster represents and why they chose that particular design.

April 10 The Renaissance

The renaissance.

French for 'rebirth was a cultural movement in Europe that began in the late Middle Ages, and spanned roughly the 14th through the 17th century. It focused on a revival of classical works. Changes in art and advancements in science were see. Its influence was felt in literature philosophy arts ,religion.

Writers and artists worked to recover the learning of ancient Greece and Rome.

What was going on during the 15th century in italy should be seen as the 'prototype of the modern world."

Questions that you should understand:

What changes took place in social , economic and political institutions?

What were the key developments in artistic expression during the renaissance?

Describe how family structures changed during the renaissance?

The growth of Italian city states.

Definitions:

feudal,despots,oligarchies,humanism, communal family,nuclear family,serf,dogma,utopia.

Humanism.

Writers and artists wanted to separate themselves from other eras. They used the term humanism to separate their era with others. They viewed the classics as their inspiration. It placed importance on living in this world and being a responsible citizen. It valued knowledge and used it as a guide to personal and political conduct.

An important character of this time was Niccolò Machiavelli. 1494 france invaded italy. He was the author of The Prince which is a study of the modern state. He realized that the time that he was living in was its own thing by itself. The state did not belong to any other political or religious power.

Renaissance Art

The culture and values of the time are seen in the art. It was different from medieval art. Medieval art was mostly churches meant to show truths and spiritual values. Art brought back ideas from classicism like proportion , order, harmony and ideal themes. Artists gained new fame. During this time the nude human form was a popular object. This time period of art began the modern idea of art representing an external world to us.

Family Life

Changed from communal living to the nuclear family. Marriage became a more personal affair.
Society and Class

The serfs of the middle ages transformed. Urbanized areas formed. slavery was still popular.

Popular people during this time.

Girolamo Savonarola Thomas More Leonardo Davinci Michelango Buonarroti. Donato Donatello Sandro Botticelli

Questions:

What does the term "renaissance"mean? Why did it begin in northern Italian cities? How were the city states governed?

In pairs develop a graphic organizer to show the common concerns interests and ideas among the individuals noted above. Who do you consider to be the best example of a renaissance man and why?

How did art change during the renaissance?

How did the printing press transform both the private and public lives of Europeans?

On one page consider this quote in relation to Machiavelli "is it better to be loved than feared, or vice versa?" The answer should come from the point of view of Lorenzo de Medici,Henry VII or Queen Isabella as well as one current political leader.

Vimy Ridge

  • When and where did the Battle of Vimy Ridge take place?
  • Why was it important for the German Army to hold Vimy Ridge? Why was Vimy Ridge important to the British and their allies?
  • What countries were involved?
  • How did the Canadians disguise their plans for the Battle of Vimy Ridge? Did their plans work?
  • How did the battle begin?
  • Why were the Canadians given the task of trying to capture Vimy Ridge?
  • Why was the Canadian attack at Vimy Ridge successful, when the previous attacks by the French and British Armies had failed?
  • Can you find Vimy Ridge on your map/atlas?

Imagine that it is April 8, 1917 – one day before the Canadians are to attack Vimy Ridge. Assume the role of a young Canadian soldier who is waiting in one of the underground tunnels at Vimy Ridge for the call to go "over the top" and advance against the German lines. Write a letter home to their family describing how they feel as they prepare for the attack and what lies ahead. Read actual letters home from Canadian First World War Veterans in the diaries and letters section of the VAC Web site.

Many historians have argued that Canada became a nation on Easter Monday, April 9,1917, when Canadian troops attacked and captured Vimy Ridge from the Germans. When Canada declared war on Germany in 1914, they did so as a colony of Great Britain and not as a sovereign country. Have students debate whether the Canadian parliament would have declared war on Germany in 1914 had Canada been an independent country at the time.

What things might have motivated a young man to volunteer to serve his country in wartime, knowing that he might not survive?

Examine these posters.

What type of messages are found on the posters? How would they entice young Canadians to join the military?

You may research on this website.

And this website.

The rise of Europe between from 1500 on

The emergence of other important areas of the world like The U.S and Japan.

Research one of the following important areas of the world in 1500

Constantinople,Timbuktu,Seville,Tenochtitlan,Beijing and

Agra

Questions that should be answered on these areas include:

1. How did communities develop in your selected country?

2. What was the main change that took place in these cities?

3. What significant ideas arose from your selected country that affected the rest of the world?

4. Describe the social organization of your selected city.
