May 1 Prometheus

We are creating our Jason game board today and reviewing gods and myths for the test.

Here is a good website to review on the Prometheus Myth.

Canadian and World History

Today we are looking at the Medici Family. Here are some starting questions

• What do you already know about the Medici family and the Renaissance?
• Where is Florence or Firenze, as it is known in Europe?
• The Renaissance starts in the 14th century; what century is that? What years does that include?
• How does a family become rich and powerful?

• What was unique about Cosimo, Brunelleschi, and Florence?
• How did Cosimo, Brunelleschi, and Florence contribute to the birth of the Renaissance?
• What problems do you foresee for the Medici family? Why?
• In what ways were the ancients and the great writers from the East and Orient different from the Christian thinkers of the Middle Ages?

The people of this time had many superstitions. Malleus Maleficarum (1487), is a book on the evils of women and a manual on catching witches. Report on the five most bizarre beliefs, including at least two that have to do with human anatomy.

THE project for this week is to examine all the things you come into contact with during a typical day. What I want you to do is write down every product that you touch or use during your day. Examples can be a banana or your alarm clock or phone or the bowls you eat breakfast out of.

Write all of these down and locate the place that the product came from. Make a list of all the products and places. Create a world wide map making stars where the products are made. Research the locations and prepare this to be handed in.

History you should today research Prometheus who is a bit different from the rest of the gods. This guy was trouble he defied other gods and later Zeus. You should have at least a page of work describing the story of Prometheus and make sure to cover these questions.

What is it that Prometheus is not afraid of?

What will Zeus do to Prometheus?

April 11 Greek Gods

In history class we polished your hero myth which should be a single page and feature common elements from traditional creation myths. You should also be familiar with Hesiod's Theogony .

The gods and goddesses of stories represent the metaphors that the ancient Greeks used to make sense of the world around them and of life in general. Research, write, and present a speech about a Greek god or goddess. You will be assigned a character for your speech. Your speech must include the following details:

* Your Greek name

* Your powers/responsibilities

* Your family relationships

* Your symbol(s) - this could be several items, including tools, animals, and/or cities.

In this history class we reviewed the Christmas myth.

We learned about Christmas Myths from around the world.

The Origins of Christmas was looked at.

Charlie Browns Christmas 30 minute episode will be screened. Discussion will consist of the modern commercial elements of holidays and their original roots.

You will create on one page create their own holiday with their own unique elements similar to the Christmas celebrated today such as gifts, trees, lights etc only these will be switched to their own ideas.

April 10 The Renaissance

The renaissance.

French for 'rebirth was a cultural movement in Europe that began in the late Middle Ages, and spanned roughly the 14th through the 17th century. It focused on a revival of classical works. Changes in art and advancements in science were see. Its influence was felt in literature philosophy arts ,religion.

Writers and artists worked to recover the learning of ancient Greece and Rome.

What was going on during the 15th century in italy should be seen as the 'prototype of the modern world."

What changes took place in social , economic and political institutions?

What were the key developments in artistic expression during the renaissance?

Describe how family structures changed during the renaissance?

The growth of Italian city states.

Definitions:

feudal,despots,oligarchies,humanism, communal family,nuclear family,serf,dogma,utopia.

Humanism.

Writers and artists wanted to separate themselves from other eras. They used the term humanism to separate their era with others. They viewed the classics as their inspiration. It placed importance on living in this world and being a responsible citizen. It valued knowledge and used it as a guide to personal and political conduct.

An important character of this time was Niccolò Machiavelli. 1494 france invaded italy. He was the author of The Prince which is a study of the modern state. He realized that the time that he was living in was its own thing by itself. The state did not belong to any other political or religious power.

Renaissance Art

The culture and values of the time are seen in the art. It was different from medieval art. Medieval art was mostly churches meant to show truths and spiritual values. Art brought back ideas from classicism like proportion , order,harmony and ideal themes. Artists gained new fame. During this time the nude human form was a popular object. This time period of art began the modern idea of art representing an external world to us.

Family Life

Changed from communal living to the nuclear family. Marriage became a more personal affair.
Society and Class

The serfs of the middle ages transformed. Urbanized areas formed. slavery was still popular.

• When and where did the Battle of Vimy Ridge take place?

Imagine that it is April 8, 1917 – one day before the Canadians are to attack Vimy Ridge. Assume the role of a young Canadian soldier who is waiting in one of the underground tunnels at Vimy Ridge for the call to go "over the top" and advance against the German lines. Write a letter home to their family describing how they feel as they prepare for the attack and what lies ahead. Read actual letters home from Canadian First World War Veterans in the diaries and letters section of the VAC Web site.

Many historians have argued that Canada became a nation on Easter Monday, April 9,1917, when Canadian troops attacked and captured Vimy Ridge from the Germans. When Canada declared war on Germany in 1914, they did so as a colony of Great Britain and not as a sovereign country. Have students debate whether the Canadian parliament would have declared war on Germany in 1914 had Canada been an independent country at the time.

What things might have motivated a young man to volunteer to serve his country in wartime, knowing that he might not survive?
